Gerardmer - Mulhouse 170 km
There were 30 attackers, those included Tony Gallopin and Tiago Machado. At the top of the Category 2, Col de la Schlucht, Thomas Voeckler took 5pts, Edet took 3pts, Rodriguez was 3rd with 2 and Tom Dumoulin took the last point. Tony Martin and Alessandro de Marchi attacked from the break, to go in tandem up the Col du Wettstein with the latter first. The two were in the same order up the Cote des Cinq Chateaux, Martin beat De Marchi at the intermediate sprint. By here they had a lead of 2'40" over the the Rolland /Rodriguez group and 6'30 over the peloton. The only men in the second group that were chasing was the Europcar riders but no one else was that bothered about catching the break. At this point there would be a change in the Yellow jersey as Tony Gallopin was leading the GC by 36 seconds, virtually. On the first Category, Le Markstein, Martin distanced himself from De Marchi. Whilst in the chasing group, Bryan Coquard, Fabian Cancellara amongst others were dropped. At the Summit, Martin took the 10 points, Rodriguez beat Edet in a sprint for 3rd and 6 points. The peloton topped the climb at 8:33 back. Tony Martin rode up the final climb of the Grand Ballon to take 2 points and to lead the King of the Mountain competition. The Tour computer told up that Martin should beat the peloton by 1 minute 27. Whilst the peloton was on the Grand Ballon, Thibaut Pinot attacked and tried to grab a few seconds. With 25 km to go, Tony Gallopin attacked on the descent to try and confirm that he would get the yellow jersey. Chérel of AG2R joined Gallopin with 20km to go. Egoitz Garcia, who was alone at the back behind the Autobus had to abandon the Tour because of his injuries. Chérel and Gallopin were caught with 10km to go. Meanwhile, Tony Martin, unsurprisingly, was given the combativity award for the most aggressive rider. The 3 time time-trial champion of the world won the stage, the most aggressive rider award and is now the leader in the king of the mountains classification after his 60km solo win. The Gallopin group came in 2'45"back. However, the peloton came in 7'46'' back and Nibali lost his Yellow Jersey by over a minute.
